Here are 3 organization tips to help your child have a successful start this school year.  Implementing these strategies will help you stay organized and will create smoother school days and peaceful evenings at home. With a little planning, the start of the school year can be a successful experience for you and your child

1 - Create Routines

Establish (or re-establish) morning and bedtime routines that you will use during the school year.  This may include referring to the routine you used during the previous school year, or creating a new routine if there are any changes to your school day.  When planning this routine, you should consider the school start time, your commute to school or childcare facility, and/or school bus pick up time.  Start this routine at least a week before school starts to get your family used to it, and make adjustments as necessary.

2 - Plan Your Weeknight Schedule

Decide what after school activities your child will participate in and determine whether or not they fit your family’s schedule.  Choose activities that support a balanced schedule, i.e., one that considers adequate time for work, rest and play.  When planning the schedule, it is a good idea to consider times that your child can rest, complete homework, and or have time for unstructured play / free time.

3 - Plan Your Family’s Meals

You will save time and money (and stress), if you spend time planning your family’s meals, particularly meals for lunches and dinners.  Choose food items that your child looks forward to seeing in their lunch box, and plan meals that are quick and easy to prepare for dinner.  Pro tip: Consider purchasing emergency meal items that don’t require a long preparation or cook time.  In my family, I ensure that we have frozen pizza handy for those nights when we are a little busier than usual.

A successful and stress-free start to the school year can be achieved. Through planning and setting routines for your family, your child can experience a successful start this school year and beyond!
