Online learning programming is an excellent educational opportunity that provides flexibility, accessibility and skill development for students looking to increase their expertise and marketability in their field.  While in theory, this educational model meets the learning needs of 21st-century-learners, in reality, not all online learning programs are created equally.  In fact, there are key aspects of this learning model that indicate the quality of the programming.  Here are 5 ways to know that you’re in a quality online program.

1 -  Technology Is Used Effectively and Efficiently To Support Learning

In the online learning environment, technology is the primary source to transmit information, facilitate learning, and create community among instructors and students.  While there is a plethora of platforms and learning tools available to enrich students’ online learning experience, it is important that they are used effectively and efficiently to optimize learning and not detract from it.  This can happen if an instructor chooses too little or too much educational tools.  The priority is your full engagement in the learning process, not to be distracted by tools that do not support this goal.  You should expect a technology-rich learning environment that is user-friendly and enhances your learning.

2 - Effective Communication Throughout

You should expect clear and thorough communication throughout your online educational journey, from the moment you are accepted and registered for a program to the completion of your studies.  At the start of your program, you should expect to receive a student’s handbook or guide from your institution with information about students’ expectations and important contacts in your program.  This will help you know what you need to succeed in the program, or the people to contact if you have any questions or concerns.  From each instructor, you should also expect a course syllabus or outline detailing course information, expectations, assignments and deadlines, learning resources that you may need to purchase, and your instructor’s contact information.

Frequent communication from your instructor and opportunities to build virtual communities are vital for developing relationships with your colleagues.  A good online program helps students build relationships by providing collaboration opportunities throughout the course.
